why learn & the required levels (2026)

French is essential for integration, work and admin. Since 2026, language levels are required for residency and nationality:

  • First multi-year card: A2.
  • Resident card (10 years): B1.
  • Naturalisation: B2.
  • Algerian nationals are exempt (bilateral agreement).

  • CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2.
  • Recognised tests: DELF (no expiry), TCF / TEF (valid 2 years).
  • University usually asks B2; nationality, B2.

  • Learn the gender (le/la) together with the word.
  • Pronunciation (the R, nasal vowels) comes with repetition.
  • Work on register (vous / tu).
  • Aim for consistency over perfection: a little every day.
