The Job Interview in France: Questions, Codes, Follow-up

Start with JARI

A French job interview has nothing in common with a Korean one. How you greet, what you wear, the tone, the real meaning behind "trick" questions, the follow-up e-mail — without preparation, even a great CV isn't enough. JARI's Professional Services offer mock interviews, coaching on French-style answers, and a native review of your pitch. The investment that boosts your chances the most.

How a French interview unfolds

Usually 2 to 3 stages: ① an HR screening (phone or video, 15-30 min), ② an interview with the hiring manager, ③ sometimes a final interview with leadership or a case study. The bigger the company, the more stages; start-ups move faster.

First impression and etiquette

  • Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early. If you're running late, always call or text ahead.
  • The first contact is a handshake. Open with "Bonjour Madame / Monsieur" and use the formal "vous" until offered otherwise.
  • Match your outfit to the sector: suit in finance/consulting, smart casual in tech/creative. When in doubt, dress one notch up.
  • A French interview is a conversation, not an interrogation: ask questions naturally too.

Common questions and how to answer

  • "Tell me about yourself": sum up your background in 2 minutes, tied to the role. Stay professional, no private life.
  • "Why our company?": show concretely that you've researched it (recent project, value, figure).
  • "Your strengths and weaknesses": be honest about a real weakness + how you're improving. Skip the "perfectionist" cliché.
  • Behavioral questions ("Tell me about a time when…"): use the STAR method — Situation, Task, Action, Result. End with a number.
  • The salary question: give a range based on your research (Glassdoor, APEC).

The French mindset

In Korea, modesty ("I lack experience but I'll work hard") is a virtue; in France it can read as a lack of confidence. Here, stating your value clearly, backed by proof, isn't rude. Balance it with teamwork and concrete examples.

Questions to ask

At the end you'll be asked "Do you have any questions?". Prepare 2 or 3: team composition, what success looks like, onboarding, the timeline for next steps. Good questions show motivation.

Video interviews

Neutral background, stable connection, camera at eye level. Test everything 5 minutes before. Check your interviewer's name and the link in advance.

The follow-up e-mail

Within 24 hours, send a short, polite thank-you e-mail, recalling a specific point from the interview and restating your interest. In France too, this leaves a good impression.

The value of a mock interview with a native

Pronunciation, phrasing, and cultural nuance are hard to master alone. Book a mock interview and pitch review through JARI's Professional Services to gain confidence. This is often what separates "rejected" from "hired."
