DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF: these French certifications open doors (study, work, residence permit, nationality), but which one to choose, at what level, at what price, and how to prepare? Which certification for which goal?

• DELF / DALF: lifelong diplomas issued by the Ministry of Education. DELF covers A1 to B2, DALF levels C1 and C2. Ideal for studies and lasting proof of level.
• TCF: a level test (result valid 2 years), available in versions (general public, study in France, access to nationality, resident card…).
• TEF: an equivalent offered by the Paris CCI, also available by use case.

New in 2026: French required for residence and nationality.

Since 1 January 2026, a French test (TCF/TEF "IRN" version or an equivalent diploma) is required for most immigration procedures, with a minimum level:

• A2 for the multi-year residence card,
• B1 for the resident card,
• B2 for access to French nationality.

Plan ahead: book your test early, as spots fill up fast.

Format and levels (CEFR).

The exams assess four skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Levels follow the CEFR (A1 beginner → C2 mastery). For a first qualified job, aim for B2.

Prices (2026 benchmarks).

Fees are set by each center. As a guide, a full TCF/TEF often ranges between €135 and €210 depending on the tests. For DELF/DALF, the price rises with the level (from a few dozen euros to ≈€150 depending on center and level).

Registering and preparing.

1. Find an approved center (France Éducation international's map for DELF/DALF/TCF).
2. Choose the version suited to your goal (studies, residence, nationality).
3. Practice with sample papers and especially the oral, often the most feared part.
4. Book early: sessions fill up, particularly before administrative deadlines.
