Choosing a Mobile Plan in France

Choosing a Mobile Plan in France

Start with JARI

Choosing a mobile plan in France when you arrive from Korea raises concrete questions: which operator, with or without a contract, how much data, how to sign up without a French tax number or bank details? JARI's Professional Services and community help you compare, subscribe, and avoid the traps (hidden commitments, price rises after a year). You pay a fair price, with no nasty surprises.

Operators and low-cost brands

France has four networks — Orange, Bouygues Telecom, SFR and Free — and each runs a much cheaper "no-commitment" brand that uses the exact same network. Same coverage, same 5G — you only lose the physical shop and advisor, which is what makes it cheaper.

JARI's pick: Sosh or B&You. These two are the best on every count — coverage, price and customer service. Sosh is Orange under the hood (the best network, especially for 5G); B&You is Bouygues Telecom. You get big-operator quality for about half the price.

Alternatives: RED by SFR (price "fixed for life", no hike after the first year) and Free Mobile (the cheapest, with a very basic €2 plan).

2026 prices (benchmarks)

5G plans with large data run around €9-16/month, no commitment:

  • B&You: 80 GB 5G at ≈€8.99, 150 GB at ≈€13.99.
  • RED by SFR: 100-150 GB 5G at ≈€11.99 (fixed price, no increase).
  • Free: 130 GB 5G at €19.99 (often €9.99 the first year), and a near-unlimited data plan at ≈€29.99.
  • Sosh: "Voyage" plans at ≈€15.99 with many countries included.

Watch for "€X/month for 1 year, then more" offers: note the post-promo price.

With or without a contract?

Simple rule: never take a plan with a commitment in France. Contract offers (usually 12 or 24 months), including those bundling a "cheap" phone, almost always cost more overall and lock you in for months.

The right move: a no-commitment plan (Sosh, B&You…) you can cancel or switch anytime. If you need a phone, buy it separately (upfront or in instalments): you stay in control of your budget and can jump on a better deal whenever one appears.

How to subscribe (newcomer)

  • You generally need French bank details (RIB) for direct debit: open a bank account first.
  • ID is required.
  • No account yet? Choose a prepaid card or a no-bank plan in the meantime (see our arrival guide).
  • An eSIM allows instant activation on compatible phones.

Network, 5G, and abroad

Check coverage at your address (networks differ by city). Most plans include use in Europe (roaming); some cover 70 to 135 countries — handy for going back to Korea. 5G is included in most recent offers.
