Paris etiquette: blend in like a local

Parisian codes with the JARI community

Unsure about a custom, a word, a tip: ask the community and JARI pros.

“Bonjour” is sacred

Rule number one: say “Bonjour” when you enter a shop or café, before any question. Not doing it comes across as rude. “Bonjour, do you speak English?” opens every door. And “merci,” “au revoir” when you leave.

Tipping

Service is included in the bill (“service compris”). A tip isn’t required: you just leave a few coins or round up if you’re happy. No 15–20% like in the US.

At the table

  • Displayed prices are tax-included (TTC): no surprise at the till.
  • Tap water is free: ask for “une carafe d’eau, s’il vous plaît.”
  • The French dine late (8–9pm); many kitchens close between 2 and 7pm.
  • For a good restaurant, book (online or by phone).

Small habits that change everything

  • Close friends do la bise (cheek kiss), but a handshake (or nothing) is fine when meeting someone.
  • Speak quietly in public places and on the métro.
  • At the bakery: “une baguette, s’il vous plaît” — and have small change ready.

JARI tip

Even three words of French (bonjour, merci, pardon) completely change the welcome. Parisians have a reputation for being cold, but a smiling “Bonjour” is often enough to win them over.
