Gyms in France: Comparison, Prices and How to Cancel.

how gyms work in France.
The market is dominated by low-cost, self-service chains: little staff on site, but long hours (usually 6am-11pm, sometimes 24/7) and tight prices. You train alone, using a badge or the club's app to get in.
Two things that surprise people arriving from Korea:
Billing runs on a 4-week cycle (cycle de 4 semaines), not a calendar month. So that's 13 payments a year, not 12. A "€30/month" membership actually costs around €390/year.
Almost everything is paid by direct debit (prélèvement SEPA) from a French account: have your bank details (RIB) ready.
The number-one factor for actually going is proximity: pick a club near home or on your commute. A slightly pricier gym 5 minutes away always beats a cheaper one far off.
the main low-cost chains.
Here's how the main brands position themselves (prices per 4-week cycle):
Basic-Fit — Europe's largest network. From €24.99, everything managed via the app. Best if you want clubs everywhere and to train while travelling.
Fitness Park — large weights/machine areas, from €19 (first cycle). Great for strength and bulking.
On Air — friendlier vibe and lots of group classes, around €32.
Neoness — big presence in Paris, rock-bottom prices from €14.90. Best value on a tight Paris budget.
Keepcool — smaller, calmer clubs with coaching included. Around €30-40, for those who dislike crowded gyms.
prices in detail (mid-2026).
Basic-Fit — three plans per 4-week cycle:
Comfort €24.99 (sign-up fee around €19.99): one club + virtual classes.
Premium €29.99 (fee around €9.99): access to all clubs in Europe + bring a friend.
Ultimate €34.99 (fee around €1): live group classes, free water, flexible cancellation.
52-week commitment by default, or +€9.99/cycle (Flex option) to remove it.
Fitness Park — CLASSIC / ACCESS+ / ULTIMATE:
With 12-month commitment: €19 first month, then €30 / €45 / €50.
No commitment: €29 then €40 / €55 / €60.
One-off joining fee about €30-49.
On Air: around €32/4 weeks for the base plan, up to €44, plus a sign-up fee (around €50).
Neoness / Keepcool (shared network of about 300 clubs): Neoness from €14.90, ACCESS around €35 and PRIME around €40/4 weeks, around €49 joining fee, with a zone surcharge (Paris pricier).
A "from €X" price almost always means the cheapest plan (one club, sometimes off-peak) with a commitment. The real cost climbs fast with options and "no commitment".
group classes and personal training.
A gym isn't just machines. Two forms of coaching exist:
Group classes (cours collectifs). Most chains offer coached or video classes: cycling/RPM, HIIT and cross-training, Body Pump (Les Mills-style strength), Zumba, yoga, core/glutes… Virtual classes (on screen) are usually included in every plan; live classes with a coach mainly come with higher plans (Basic-Fit Ultimate, Fitness Park Access+, On Air) or as an add-on. Check your club's schedule before choosing a plan.
Personal training ("PT"). A coach just for you, for a tailored program and technique fixes. Typically €50-80 per session in a gym, and often €60-100+ in Paris. To cut costs, small-group sessions (2-3 people) drop to €25-40 per person, and monthly packages lower the unit price by 10-15%.
At-home coaching qualifies for a 50% tax credit (crédit d'impôt): a €60 session really costs around €30. Always check the coach holds the BPJEPS (the legal minimum to coach for pay in France).
💡 JARI tip: always pick a qualified coach (BPJEPS) — via your gym (PT offer), a specialised coaching platform, or a recommendation from the JARI Community. A good coach, in your own language, gets you further, faster.
premium gyms in Paris.
If you want high-end (spa, pool, sharp classes, polished vibe), Paris has its addresses. Prices are a world apart from low-cost:
Klay (2nd arr.) — weights, combat sports (boxing, muay thai) and a spa. Around €175/month (12-month commitment).
L'Usine — several Paris clubs, top-tier equipment, sauna/hammam, juice bar. About €2,050/year.
Blanche (9th arr.) — over 3,000 m², a 20 m pool, aquafitness, bootcamp, yoga, sauna and a restaurant. About €215/month (around €2,400/year).
Also worth a look: Ken Club, Le Tigre, and specialized boutique studios (HIIT, cycling, boxing), usually paid per class (€20-30) or in class packs.
Many premium gyms offer a trial session or day pass. Use it to test the vibe and classes before paying up.
signing up, step by step.
Simple, online or at the club:
Pick your club and plan.
Have your bank details (RIB) (for the SEPA direct debit) and ID ready.
Get your badge or activate the app that acts as your entry key.
Note the start date carefully — it drives the commitment and notice-period (préavis) countdown.
cancelling without getting caught (the crucial bit).
This is where many get trapped. Three things to know:
1. "Cancel in 3 clicks". Since 1 June 2023, any contract signed online must be cancellable online easily. Basic-Fit and Fitness Park let you cancel right in their app (Profile → Membership → Cancel).
2. Notice period (préavis). Usually around 30 days (4 weeks): cancellation takes effect at the end of the current cycle + notice. Request it before your intended last month.
3. Leaving before the commitment ends. During the 12 months, you can cancel without penalty with a legitimate reason (motif légitime) (Sports Code / Consumer Code), proof attached:
Moving more than 15-30 km from a club of the chain.
A medical reason preventing exercise (medical certificate, certificat médical).
Job loss or work relocation.
If a chain still requires a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt (LRAR), send it and keep proof of posting — it protects you in a date dispute. Never rely on an unconfirmed email.
vocabulary to know.
sans engagement / avec engagement: no commitment / committed (usually 12 months).
frais d'inscription (or d'adhésion): one-off joining fee at the start.
prélèvement (SEPA): automatic debit from your account.
cycle de 4 semaines: 4-week billing period (≠ calendar month).
cours collectif: group class / coaching·PT: one-to-one session with a coach.
préavis: notice period between your request and the actual end.
motif légitime: a legally recognized reason to cancel penalty-free.
LRAR: registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt.
Tight budget + long hours → Basic-Fit or Fitness Park.
Low budget in Paris → Neoness (from €15).
Calm + coaching included → Keepcool.
Group classes and vibe → On Air.
High-end (spa, pool, sharp classes) → Klay, L'Usine, Blanche.
You want tailored guidance → add PT coaching at your gym, or find a qualified coach through the JARI Community.
Short stay (a year, exchange) → favour no commitment.
common mistakes.
Calculating over 12 months instead of 13 cycles: the real yearly cost is higher than it looks.
Signing a 12-month commitment for a stay of just a few months.
Forgetting the notice period and paying one cycle more than planned.
Cancelling by plain email without keeping proof, then still getting charged.
Paying an unqualified coach: insist on the BPJEPS.
Choosing a gym too far away "because it's cheaper" and never going.
FAQ.
Are group classes included in the membership?
Virtual classes usually yes; live coached classes depend on the plan (mostly higher tiers). Check the club schedule.
How much is a personal coach?
Around €50-80 per session in a gym (more in Paris). In a small group, €25-40/person. At home, half price after the tax credit.
Are memberships really no-commitment?
Some plans yes, but most lock you in for 12 months. No-commitment costs around €10/cycle more.
Can I cancel if I move back to Korea?
Yes: moving (especially abroad) is a legitimate reason. Attach proof.
Do I need a medical certificate to sign up?
No, no longer required for a leisure gym. It's mainly used to cancel on health grounds.
