Arriving alone, it's easy to feel the French are hard to approach. In truth, "French-style" friendship is simply slow to start but very durable — once the door opens, it stays open. The trick is to multiply the opportunities instead of waiting. Aim for two circles at once: the Korean community, for support and your own language, and local connections, to settle in and improve your French. Your best asset? You have what many French people want: Korean language and culture. It's a magnet for meeting people.
Before looking elsewhere, your home base is right here on JARI:
The winning move: create or join a club (동아리) on JARI Community around a passion (hiking, K-pop dance, games, cooking). A regular meetup builds friendships far more reliably than a one-off event.
The most efficient shortcut: Koreans and French people meet over a drink to practice both languages (often 40 minutes in French, 40 in Korean). Relaxed vibe, everyone's there for the same reason. Start by launching or joining a "Franco-Korean exchange" 모임 on JARI Community — you reach exactly the right audience. As a complement, these groups also exist on Meetup: Kore (France-Korea friendship), Gengoffee Coréen, Olala Korea. The Cercle Franco-Coréen is another meeting spot.
No need to know anyone there: language cafés (cafés des langues) gather people from all backgrounds. You get a sticker with your name and the languages you speak or want to learn, then you go talk to others.
Great if you're shy: the whole setup is designed for approaching strangers, since everyone comes for exactly that.
To warm up between outings:
Common sense: for a first online-met meetup, pick a public place (e.g. a Korean café found) and tell someone close to you.
The Korean Cultural Center (20 rue La Boétie, Paris 8e) offers Korean classes, workshops (calligraphy, dance), a library, exhibitions, concerts and films. You'll meet both Koreans and French fans of Korea. To stay in the loop, follow Korean events, and find Korean spots (cafés, marts, restaurants) — all natural meeting points.
The most natural path to lasting bonds is sharing a regular activity:
Do I need to speak French well already? No. Language exchanges, apps and JARI Community also work in English and are there to help you improve. Where do I meet other Koreans? JARI Community first, then the Korean Cultural Center, churches, and Franco-Korean Meetup groups. Is it expensive? JARI Community and Calendar, most cafés des langues and basic apps are free. I'm shy — where do I start? The forum and meetups on JARI, then a small in-person format (café des langues, a workshop at the Cultural Center).
