Getting Around Île-de-France: Navigo, SNCF, Vélib' & Shared Mobility

Getting around in France quickly becomes essential — and between the Navigo, trains, Vélib' and shared bikes or mopeds, it's easy to get lost. This guide gathers everything: what it is, what it costs (2026 fares), and above all where to sign up, with direct links. You read, you understand, you click. (Updated June 2026 — fares change, check the official sites before buying.)

JARI tip: ask transit questions in the Community, and if you need a Korean-speaking driver (VTC), find one via Pro Services.

Public transport in Île-de-France

In Paris and its suburbs, a single network covers metro, RER, bus, tram and Transilien (suburban trains), run by Île-de-France Mobilités (with RATP and SNCF). Everything goes through a Navigo card — or your smartphone. The reference site: iledefrance-mobilites.fr.

Which Navigo pass to choose?

  • Navigo Mois (monthly): unlimited, all zones. Ideal for a daily commute.
  • Navigo Semaine (weekly): same, by the week (Monday to Sunday).
  • Navigo Annuel (annual): a yearly plan billed monthly — cheaper overall than 12 monthly passes.
  • Navigo Liberté+: no subscription, you pay as you go (trips billed at month's end, at a reduced rate). Great if you travel little. You need a RIB.
  • Imagine R: for students/pupils, an annual pass at a reduced rate — the best option if you study.
  • Navigo Easy: a rechargeable (nameless) card to load tickets or a Day pass — handy for occasional use or visitors.

Student → Imagine R. You work and commute daily → Navigo Mois (50% reimbursed by your employer). You travel little → Navigo Liberté+.

Pass Price (2026)
Navigo Mois (all zones) €90.80
Imagine R (student, annual) €393/year
Metro / RER single ticket €2.55
Bus / tram ticket €2.05

Fares as of 1 January 2026. Full price list: iledefrance-mobilites.fr/titres-et-tarifs.

Where and how to get a Navigo

  • Online: at iledefrance-mobilites.fr, the "Mon Navigo" area → "Souscrire ou commander un passe". For a reduced rate, prepare a digital photo (jpeg); for Liberté+ or Annuel, a RIB.
  • On your phone: the Île-de-France Mobilités app lets you load your Navigo Mois, buy tickets, and even put your Navigo on the phone (Android, and iPhone depending on the model).
  • Via the apps Bonjour RATP and SNCF Connect, which now sell all passes (including Annuel and Imagine R).
  • In person: commercial agencies, RATP ticket offices, Comptoirs Navigo Services at SNCF stations.
  • By phone: Navigo agency at 09 69 39 22 22.

Travelling by train with the SNCF

For long distances, the SNCF: TGV INOUI (high-speed), OUIGO (low-cost TGV, very cheap), TER (regional) and Intercités. Tickets on sncf-connect.com (site + app). Book in advance for the best prices, especially on TGV.

SNCF discount cards

If you take the train often, a card pays for itself fast:

  • Carte Avantage Jeune (12-27): €49/year, -30% on TGV INOUI, TER and Intercités. Adulte (27-59) and Senior (60+) versions at the same price.
  • Carte Liberté: €349/year, for frequent travellers — exchangeable/refundable tickets and bigger discounts.
  • Max Jeune subscription (16-27): ≈€79/month, for travelling very often (TGV INOUI + OUIGO, discounts on TER).

All available at sncf-connect.com/catalogue.

Public bike-share: Vélib'

Vélib' Métropole is the public bike-share (mechanical and electric) in Paris and the metropolis, with stations everywhere. Fares (since 12/08/2025):

  • V-Plus: €4.30/month (or €51.60/year) — -25% youth (under 26)/seniors = €3.22/month, -50% solidarity rate = €2.15/month. Mechanical bike free for the first 30 min; electric = small extra.
  • V-Max: €9.30/month (or €111.60/year) — includes electric: the first 2 daily e-bike trips at €0.50 (€0.37 youth/seniors).
  • Occasional pass (no subscription): per ride.

Sign up and details: velib-metropole.fr.

Free-floating e-bikes (no station)

Pick up and drop off the bike where you want (within allowed zones), via an app. Since October 2025, 3 operators in Paris:

  • Lime: €1 unlock + €0.28/minli.me
  • Dott: €1 unlock + €0.35/minridedott.com
  • Voi: €0.25/min, no unlock fee (often the cheapest) — voi.com

Each operator offers passes (daily, monthly) that are cheaper if you ride often. The Bonjour RATP app lets you locate and rent Dott, Lime and Voi without installing several apps.

Shared electric mopeds

For shared motorized two-wheelers in Paris, 2 operators (until end 2028):

You rent by the minute via the app, the helmet is provided under the seat. Conditions: be at least 14, and have the AM licence (BSR) if born from 1988 onward. Good for slightly longer trips or where the metro doesn't go.

E-scooters: heads-up

Shared e-scooters are banned in Paris since 31 August 2023 (after a referendum). No operator offers them in the capital anymore.

You can still use your own e-scooter (on bike lanes, 25 km/h max, from age 14). And in other cities (Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux…), shared e-scooters still exist — check the operator's app on the spot.

Apps that bring it all together

Budget tips

  • Employer reimbursement: 50% of your transport pass if you work.
  • Imagine R for students: far cheaper than the Navigo Mois.
  • SNCF Carte Avantage (€49/year) if you take the train often; OUIGO for low prices.
  • Compare subscription vs pay-as-you-go: few trips → Liberté+ or per-ride bike; daily use → a pass.

Common mistakes

  • Taking a Navigo Mois when you're a student (Imagine R is cheaper) or travel little (Liberté+).
  • Forgetting the employer reimbursement (50%).
  • Buying TGV tickets at the last minute: book early, consider OUIGO.
  • Looking for a shared e-scooter in Paris (banned since 2023).
  • Travelling without a validated ticket → a fine (frequent checks on the metro and RER).
