Eating Well in France: Cuisine, Specialties, Where to Go

Start with JARI

French cuisine is an art of living in its own right — structured meals, regional produce, cheeses, bakeries, wine. For a Korean arriving here, there's a lot to discover, and a few codes to know so you don't miss out. The JARI community and Professional Services guide you: where to eat, what to try, how to cook — and how to find your Korean flavors too.

The French meal

A full meal often follows the starter – main – dessert structure, with bread, and sometimes cheese before dessert. Lunch (12-2 pm) and dinner (from 7:30-8 pm) are important moments — longer and more convivial than mere refueling. The apéritif before the meal is an institution.

Must-tries

  • Bread and the bakery: "tradition" baguette, croissant, pain au chocolat — fresh every day.
  • Cheeses: hundreds of varieties (camembert, comté, goat…), served before dessert.
  • Charcuterie: ham, saucisson, pâté, perfect for the apéro.
  • Regional dishes: bœuf bourguignon, cassoulet, choucroute, ratatouille, Breton crêpes.
  • Pastries: éclair, tart, macaron, mille-feuille.

Regional specialties

Every region has its cuisine: the North (moules-frites, beer), Brittany (crêpes, seafood), the Southwest (duck, cassoulet), Provence (olive oil, sun vegetables), Alsace (choucroute, flammekueche), Lyon (bouchons, quenelles), plus the cheeses and wines of each terroir.

Where to eat

From the café to the bistro, the brasserie to the fine-dining restaurant, there's something for every budget. Markets and bakeries let you eat very well for little. For the codes (booking, tipping, tap water), see our dedicated guide.

Cooking at home

Supermarkets, markets, and Asian grocers offer everything you need, including Korean products. A rice cooker, a few basic sauces, and good fresh produce are enough to cook both French and Korean.

Eating Korean in France

Homesickness runs through the stomach: Paris is full of Korean restaurants and grocers, and online delivery covers all of France. Nothing beats a good jjigae to feel at home.
