Arranging childcare for your young child in France means choosing between a crèche, a childminder, or in-home care, understanding costs and benefits, and above all starting very early (places are scarce). JARI's Professional Services help you compare options, build the files (crèche, CAF), and find a spot that fits your budget.
Childcare options.
Collective crèche: care in a facility, staffed by professionals. Very sought-after: register during pregnancy with your town hall.
Micro-crèche: a smaller facility, often with more flexible hours.
Registered childminder (assistante maternelle): cares for a few children at their home. You are their employer (contract, salary).
In-home care (garde à domicile): someone looks after your child at your place (pricier, can be shared between two families).
Halte-garderie: occasional / part-time care.
Costs and benefits.
At a crèche, the fee is calculated on your income (CNAF scale): often the most economical option.
For a childminder or in-home care, the CAF pays the childcare supplement (CMG), which reimburses a large part of the salary and contributions.
A tax credit for young-child care costs may also apply.
Timing it right.
Crèche places are very limited: submit your request during pregnancy or as soon as you arrive. For a childminder, start searching several months ahead. Your commune's Relais Petite Enfance (RPE) informs you for free and points you to available professionals.
The concrete steps.
Create / update your CAF file (allocataire number).
Register for a crèche at the town hall and/or contact the RPE for the list of childminders.
For a childminder: sign an employment contract and declare them via Pajemploi (Urssaf), which triggers the CMG.
Keep receipts for the tax credit.
