Finding a Doctor in France: Doctolib, GP, Specialists

start with JARI

  • Community — recommendations for Korean-speaking doctors, dentists and paediatricians.
  • Expert services — booking, accompaniment/interpreting, insurance advice.

first: declare a médecin traitant (GP)

  • Why? In the pathway, the Sécu reimburses 70 %; without a GP, only 30 %.
  • Method ① at a consultation, ask the doctor to be your GP (they register you on ameli).
  • Method ② online from your ameli.fr account (the doctor's agreement is required).
  • People usually pick a generalist.

booking on Doctolib

  • Doctolib (site/app): search by area, specialty and language, book and teleconsult.
  • Indicate if you're a new patient, bring your carte Vitale and mutuelle card.
  • Turn on cancellation alerts to grab a slot faster.
  • Also use ameli's health directory and SOS Médecins (home visits).

sector 1 vs sector 2 (the price)

  • Sector 1 — agreed tariff (GP 30 €), no extra fees.
  • Sector 2 — free fees, extra charges possible; OPTAM doctors keep them moderate.
  • Check how far your mutuelle covers the extra charges (see Mutuelle).

seeing a specialist

  • In principle via the GP (better reimbursement).
  • Direct access: gynaecologist, ophthalmologist, psychiatrist (16-25), dentist, paediatrician (children).
  • Otherwise, bring the GP's referral letter.

if language worries you

  • Check the languages spoken on the Doctolib profile.
  • Find a Korean-speaking doctor via the JARI Community; if needed, accompaniment/interpreting via Expert services.

medical deserts

  • No GP available? Turn to a health centre or a CPTS; reporting your situation to the health insurance can help you get one assigned.

tips

  • Declare a GP quickly on arrival.
  • Popular specialists book weeks to months ahead: plan.
  • Can't make it? Cancel (no-shows can be penalised).

common mistakes

  • Seeing a specialist without a GP (less reimbursed).
  • Ignoring sector 2 extra fees.
  • Not cancelling an appointment (penalty, harder to rebook).
